A great Cup Double

Queens have landed a great `double` with Hibs at Palmerston and Rangers at Ibrox all in the space of 12 days.

We`ve a Scottish Communities League Cup tie against Hibs on 28th of August and it`s the first time we`ve met them since that Scottish Cup tie at Palmerston on February 24th, 2007.

They beat us 2-1 that day in front of an `all ticket` crowd of 6198 with 2200 down from Edinburgh.

Hibs took the lead on the stroke of half-time but just two minutes into the second half John O`Neill headed home an equaliser.

But sadly, only minutes later, the visitors netted a second which proved to be the winner.

It was Willie Gibson`s last game for Queens before signing for Kilmarnock in what proved to be a complex deal.

The team that afternoon was MacDonald, Paton, McQuilken, Lauchlan, Thomson, O`Neill, Scally, Adams, Gibson, Dobbie and O`Connor.

Back in October 2003 we met Hibs up at Easter Road in the League Cup but they pipped us once again by 2-1.

1800 Queens fans were there to cheer us on and the match was actually delayed for close on half an hour to allow all the Queens` support time to get in.

The total crowd that night was 7613 with Alex Burke netting for us from the penalty spot.

And the Queens` starting line-up read, Scott, Paton, Aitken, McAlpine, Reid, Thomson, Bagan, Bowie, O`Connor, Burke and Burns.

During the early 1950s Hibs had probably the best forward line in Scottish football and their names will still `roll off the tongues` of some of our older supporters--Gordon Smith, Bobby Johnstone, Lawrie Reilly, Eddie Turnbull and Willie Ormand.

To this day they are still known as `The Famous Five`.

One Queens` player who has faced Hibs on several occasions is our former skipper Jim Thomson and during his playing days at Palmerston the `big man` notched up 358 first team starts.

His main claim to fame was heading home that dramatic equaliser in the Scottish Cup Final at Hampden in 2008.

He and his wife Victoria are now both heavily involved at Palmerston in joint roles of Commercial Managers and Jim himself doubles up as Community Coach as well.

He`ll no doubt be looking forward to facing Rangers again although he`ll not be featuring this time around, and so too will be hundreds of Queens fans as well.
