u20's Start with a Win

The u20's enjoyed a successful start to their Development League West campaign at Palmerston last night with a fine 2-0 win over a more experienced Clyde side which included several first team players. In contrast the Queens side started with three 17 year olds and a 16 year old in the line up and nobody over the age of 20. 15 year old Ross Irving came on as a substitute in the second half.

The only goal of the opening period arrived early when John Wight got clear on to an excellent through ball from defender Dan Harvey and lobbed the goalkeeper from the edge of the box. Both teams had opportunities to add to the score but good goalkeeping kept the score down with one particularly good low save from Queens keeper Sam Henderson.

In the second half Clyde changed their formation to try to get on top of the Queens midfield of Akubuine, Gardiner and Bell but it was Queens who doubled the advantage when John Wight got on the end of Owen Bell's free kick to grab his second goal. Goalkeeper Sam Henderson had earlier been the hero with a fine penalty save and he continued to deny Clyde with a string of late saves also whilst Queens too had late chances to add to the margin as the game became stretched.
