Alloa were the first footers to Palmerston, but it turned out to be a similar story as the Wasps come from behind to the claim the three points with two goals in the second half. Grant Murray made one change to the side that faced Clyde last week with Ross Irving replacing Gavin Reilly up front. And Ross was involved in the first real chance of the game, when Stephen Hendrie played a decent ball in from the left, the youngster couldnt connect properly but the flag was up for offside anyway.
Chances were few and far between, but midway through the first half, as a corner floated in Jay Hogarth flapped at it and as the ball fell, Josh Todd had the shot, but the keeper saved. Two minutes later Queens made the breakthrough, again the visitors failed to clear properly and as the ball fell nicely for Ruari Paton, he took a touch to hit a low right foot shot into the bottom corner.
Queens were enjoying the bulk of the game and Calvin McGrory hit a shot from distance, but it was straight at the keeper. And with five minutes of the first half remaining, Paton was denied a second when his well struck free kick crashed back off the crossbar.
HALF-TIME: Queens 1 Alloa 0
Queens had to make a half time switch as Paul McKay who took a hefty knock in the first half when Charlie Cowie bravely came to clear couldnt continue and he was replaced with Rico Quitongo, with Hendrie moving into the central defensive role. Within a couple of minutes of the restart, Iain Wilsons right foot effort flew just wide of the upright. But as Alloa stepped up their game, Bradley Rodden hooked the ball into the box and had Cowie scrambling. Queens were still looking to extend their lead and as Todd played a good ball wide for Paton, he tried to get it across for Irving but the defence managed to get a touch ahead of the young striker to clear.
Irving inside the box tried to make space for a right foot shot but Hogarth punched clear and then another powerful drive from McGrorys effort just cleared the crossbar. At the other end, Luke Strachans shot took a deflection, but Cowie collected.
On the hour mark, Hogarth came out to collect but missed the ball and with Irving in behind, Scott Taggart cleared off the line. As the clearance came back out to Paton, he looked certain to score but fired high and wide to pass up a great chance for the home side. Minutes later, McGrory played a short corner that was picked up by Lewis Gibson, the young winger hit a curling right foot shot that was dipping under the bar, but the keeper managed to push it over.
The game turned minutes later when Hendrie made a mistake. Conor Sammon pounced on it and nipped in to place the ball under Cowie to pull Alloa level. It gave them a lift and Sammon headed just wide before Hendrie had to clear again from Sammon.
Queens tried to get back in front, but Hogarth saved Patons shot before Patons low shot deflected for a corner. And the keeper again got down well to save from Gibson. And with five minutes of the game remaining, there was a real sting in the tail for Queens as they failed to cut out a cross from the left and Ross MacIver headed past Cowie for the win.
