We can confirm that Charlie Cowie has joined Gretna 2008 on a season long loan, as he continues his development in senior football.
19 year old Club Academy graduate Charlie famously made his debut for the club as a 16 year old schoolboy in December 2020 when illness to Rohan Ferguson and injury to Jack Leighfield thrust him unexpectedly into the spotlight in a crucial away game at Raith Rovers. A clean sheet followed in a 2-0 win and he has been part of the first team squad since, making two starts last season when Max Currie was injured and Scott Fox had left the club. That brief recall aside he had a superb season on loan with Gartcairn last year as the Airdrie based side were crowned West of Scotland First Divsion Champions and Charlie was voted the division's best goalkeeper. This season will see a step up to the Lowland League and regular Tier 5 football with Bryan Gilfillan's Gretna side. Charlie played for Gretna as a Trialist against ourselves last Wednesday and against Carlisle United this week.
The loan agreement contains an option to recall in January and, of course, the potential for 7 day emergency recalls in the event of either of our other first team goalkeepers being unavailable.
As the only Dumfries & Galloway side in the Lowland League this season following Dalbeattie Star's relegation, we'd like to wish Charlie and everyone at Gretna the best of luck for the season ahead.
