Queens

Craig Brown (21')

Following last weekend’s win over Annan, there was no surprise that Manager Peter Murphy stuck with the same starting eleven for the trip to Montrose.

It was a fairly even start to the game with the first real chance for Queens coming in the tenth minute when Mikey Hewitt headed over from a Harry Cochrane corner.

Seven minutes later Benji Luissint tried to make space for himself but couldn’t get the room and hit a low shot well wide of the upright.

As the home side started to take more control, Blair Lyons hit a snapshot but couldn’t get it near the target. However, they did open the scoring midway through the first half when Oscar MacIntyre wasn’t strong enough with his clearance and although Matty Douglas cut out the danger, the ball fell kindly for Craig Brown who took a touch and made his way to the 18-yard line before unleashing a powerful right foot shot across Ross Stewart’s goal into the net.

With their tails up, Lyons hit it low but was again the wrong side of the post.

As Queens tried to get back on level terms, Josh Walker played a free kick into the box but Hewitt couldn’t get the connection and with 33 minutes played, Cameron Gill pulled off a good save to turn Kyle Doherty’s first time effort out for a corner.

Ten minutes before the break, Kai Kennedy and Walker kept battling away and as Jack Brydon took the throw in, Douglas headed over.

Cochrane was off target when he tried a shot from distance and Luissint wasn’t forceful enough to challenge when Kennedy played the ball into the box.

HALF TIME: Montrose 1 Queens 0

In a bid to change things, Brennan Dickenson came on at half time. And in the early stages of the second half, Hewitt hit a right foot shot just wide after good play from Kennedy.

The windy conditions was making it fairly scrappy and the game lacked real quality. Lyons was causing a few problems but Matheus Machado blasted over.

With nothing really to get either sets of fans excited, Dickenson had a wild effort before Brown burst forward with a similar effort.

In the battle to salvage a point, substitute Fraser Bryden was unlucky seven minutes from time when MacIntyre did well down the left and kept his cross into the box low, it was met by the striker who had just joined on loan from Ayr on Friday, he hit it well but Gill pulled off a terrific save to keep it out.

A strange evening descended into chaos for Queens in the final minutes of normal time and boiled over into the added on minutes. Firstly, midfielder Lewis O’Donnell who had come off the bench had to be replaced himself when he rolled his ankle. Then having used all their subs, they were then left to play out the closing stages a man down when defender Brydon had to leave the field with a hamstring injury. Things went from bad to worse when referee Graham Grainger didn’t like a challenge made by Cochrane and headed straight for his top pocket to produce a red card, leaving Queens another man down.

But they kept fighting and Douglas blocked from Kane Hester.

Things remained heated after the full time whistle and both assistant manager, Colin McMenamin and goalkeeping coach Jon Connolly were red carded for questioning some decisions.
