Montrose was the destination as we looked for our first away win in the league at the thirteenth time of asking. With Matty Douglas picking up a nasty knee injury against Arbroath last week, Jack Hannah returned from illness to take his place in the heart of defense. That was one of three changes made to the starting eleven from the last outing, the others saw Benjamin Luissint and Oscar MacIntyre drop to the bench with Jordan Allan and Taylor Charters coming in.
With the wind swirling around Links Park, it took both sides a bit of time to master the conditions but Queens were winning the ariel battle in the early stages and limiting the threat of the home side. Blair Lyons did cut inside but he was marshalled away from goal by Jack Brydon.
Ten minutes in, Liam Smith picked out Kyle Doherty on the right-hand side, he hit a low shot towards goal but it was an easy save for Cammy Gill.
Five minutes later Callum Sandilands got away with a foul on Brennan Dickenson and made his way into the box but Ross Stewart came out to take the ball from his feet.
The deadlock was broken minutes later when Reece Lyon used his power to get into the 18-yard area where he took the shot before being bundled over. The shot was wide but the midfielder won his side a penalty. Like away wins, penalties havent been Queens forte this season so it was Adam Brooks who showed the bravery to step up to take the spot kick, it took ages but the forward fired the ball low down the middle to open the scoring.
On the half hour mark, Queens claimed for a second penalty when they thought the ball was handled in the area but that wasnt given and the hosts made a similar claim as they switched play to the other end.
As Queens looked to extend their advantage, Allan headed towards goal but it was caught by Gill and then the visitors had to defend on mass as Lyons looked to create an opening. He did get the ball through but Craig Wighton was offside.
Queens attacked again quickly and as they moved it up field, Smith laid the ball out wide to Charters, his shot was on target but Gill saved to push it out for a corner. As the set piece was played in, it fell to Dickenson outside the box but his left foot effort flew over the bar.
With half time approaching, Queens created another opportunity for Dickenson with some good passing football, but as he tried to find the net from distance, the ball landed the wrong side of the post.
The final chance of the first half fell to the home side when, Andrew Steeves set up Lyons who although under presser from Brydon managed to get the ball across to Sandilands but as he tried to control on his chest, he got it all wrong and Queens regained control.
HALF TIME Montrose 0 Queens 1
It was Queens who started the second half on the front foot and four minutes after the restart, Smith and Allan linked up well to get themselves forward but Gill managed to collect as the former looked to take the ball round him.
Lyons then went down inside the box as though he had been taken out by a snipper but the penalty wasnt given and as Steeves played in the corner, Stewart punched the ball over the bar. The danger wasnt over though and as Owen Stirton headed across goal, Wighton couldnt connect.
Midway through the second half, Queens were denied what looked like a strong claim for a penalty when MacIntyre who had replaced Doherty at the break was pushed from behind inside the box, it wasnt given and as Queens played on Brooks tried to chip the keeper but cleared the bar instead.
However, a second penalty was awarded ten minutes from time, Brooks who had scored the first stepped up again but this time Gill guessed correctly and dived to his left-hand side to make the save. But from the resulting corner, Queens did make it two as Harry Cochrane got on the end of it to rifle the ball into the net from outside the box.
Already well on course to eventually break their duck and get that elusive first away win of the league campaign, substitute Fraser Bryden secured the victory two minutes after coming off the bench. The striker was upended inside the box and for the third time in the game, referee Iain Snedden pointed to the spot. Bryden got up to take it himself and sent the keeper the wrong way to score.
A good afternoon was rounded off as Kai Kennedy made his return to first team action after a lay off due to a hamstring injury with a few minutes of the ninety left.
