Match Preview - St Mirren 6rd Dec

Gary Naysmith, watched from the stand as we fell to another defeat against Dumbarton on Saturday. The new manager, though, has a chance to make an immediate impact as St Mirren come to Palmerston on Tuesday night.

Given both teams recent form is this the moveable object against the stoppable force?

The Opposition

St Mirren have also changed managers since we won 3-1 in Paisley in September. Alex Rae paid the price for a very disappointing start and was sacked by the club just one game after that defeat.

The Paisley club then appointed Jack Ross, who had spent two years as a player with the club. Ross had guided Alloa to one of their best ever starts and had them sitting 3rd in League One at the time of his move to St Mirren. That start included two wins over East Fife, managed of course by Gary Naysmith – a 3-0 victory in the IRNBRU cup and a 2-1 league win back in August.

Ross has found things tougher in the Championship, though, and his side are yet to record a league point under his management, losing all 6 games after picking up a couple of draws under caretaker boss, Allan McManus. The Paisley side are still looking for their first league win of the season.

They've faired better in the cups though, and Ross has overseen an IRNBRU cup win, over Ayr, to see them through to the semi-final and a William Hill Scottish cup win where they comfortably dispatched Spartans, 5-1, just two weeks ago.

It also looked like their league form might change last week, when they took the lead at the Falkirk Stadium. However, a red card for young defender Jack Baird turned the game and the home side went on to run out 3-1 winners, to inflict a sixth straight league defeat. A record only matched by one other team in the division.

The Dressing Room

Outgoing caretaker, Jim Thomson, spoke after the Dumbarton game, "If they keep playing like that the tide will turn. All the boys were gutted, I couldn't have asked for any more effort. They're scratching their heads as to how they didn't win the game. The new manager will bring a new freshness, hopefully that kick starts the season again. They've been showing signs of it the last couple of weeks so they just need to turn performances into wins. Confidence is massive when you're a footballer and sometimes when its low its difficult to get back but it just needs a scrappy 1-0 or a scrappy win to get a bit of confidence back."

New manager, Gary Naysmith, had this too say ahead of the game, "First and foremost my biggest thing is to get the team back winning on the pitch. I'm looking forward to getting going and getting to know the players.

Its not going to happen overnight, the players are going to have to get use to my ideas, I'm going to have to get used to the players, it will be a work in progress but it would be great if we could hit ground running."

The Team

There are no fresh injury concerns ahead of this game.

The Officials

Referee : Crawford Allan
Assistant 1 : Gary Hilland
Assistant 2 : Ryan Oliver

We've lost the last 3 games Mr Allan has taken charge of, including the 1-0 defeat at Raith earlier this season.

The Stats

Fans of a nervous disposition may want to look away now. Shouting "Im a Queens fan, get me out of here" will not work.

Both sides come into this game on the back of 6 straight league defeats. Since the last match between the clubs, we won the following week – to go top of the league! - then drew with Hibs and Dumbarton while St Mirren drew with Dumbarton and Falkirk but lost to Dunfermline, before the two clubs embarked on a run both will be desperate to end.

The head to heads at Palmerston make for more encouraging reading, with the home side ahead 15 to 12 with 10 draws.

St Mirrens last win at Palmerston, though, was only a year ago, when a 1-0 win in September 2015 gave them their first league win of the season.
