Match Preview v Peterhead (A) - 20th Aug 22

A bit of history will be made tomorrow when we face Peterhead for the first time in a league match.

We have only played them three times in competitive games and a fun fact from our photographer Colin Johnstone is that by winning each on, we reached three cup finals!

All the matches have all been away from home, the first came on the 6th of August 2002 when John O’Neill and Peter Weatherson scored in a 2-0 victory in the Challenge Cup. While our next meeting in November 2007 resulted in a 5-0 win and started our run to the Scottish Cup Final. On the day, Stephen Dobbie and Sean O’Connor both grabbed doubles with the fifth coming from Paul Burns. And our last meeting was the 9th of October 2010 in the Alba Cup semi-final when Craig Reid and Derek Holmes scored within three minutes of each other to give us a two-goal lead before Martin Bavidge scored to make it 2-1.

Neither side have made the start to the league campaign that they would’ve liked.  The hosts sit 9th in the table with a point that they picked up from a draw away at Clyde. While last weeks draw at home to Airdrie was our second draw of the season leaving us a point and a place ahead after three games.

Looking ahead to the game, Manager Wullie Gibson said “Last week was a case of a game of two halves. We were second best during the first 45 minutes and let Airdrie dictate the game, but we were far better after the break, and we were on top and controlled it. If we had been a bit more clinical, we could’ve taken the three points but overall, a draw was probably fair.

This week we make the long journey up to Peterhead, a club I know well having played there. I enjoyed success in my time with them, winning the league, but friendship goes out the window as we look for our first league win.

Like us they’ve not made the start to the season they would’ve hoped and will want to turn on a performance at home so we know what we can expect but as I’ve said before I believe we have good players we just need to make sure we start where we left off against Airdrie and play like that for the whole game”.
