Match Report

For the second of our Group A Premier Sports Cup matches Manager, Peter Murphy made three changes to the starting eleven to face fellow league one side Dumbarton. Ross Stewart, Kai Kennedy, and Oscar MacIntyre who all started against Aberdeen at the weekend dropped to the bench for this one, coming in for them were Kieran McKechnie, Zander Craik and Jay Hogarth who made his debut in goal.

This was going to be a closer test for Queens than the one they faced against Premiership opposition, and they got off to a decent start, opening the scoring after just seven minutes. McKechnie did well on the wing before crossing into the box where Leighton McIntosh was on hand to fire the ball into the net for his first competitive goal for the club.

A minute later, Craik played the ball in for his fellow frontman but this time, McIntosh couldn’t adjust his feet to control.

It was mainly the home side in attack for the first fifteen minutes before Benji Luissint gave away a free kick. James Hilton took the set piece for the visitors, but Hogarth got down low to push it out for a corner.

Midway through the half, Matty Douglas and Harry Cochrane got themselves in a bit of a tangle and as they failed to clear, Carlo Pignatiello hooked the ball the wrong side of the post.

With just under half an hour gone, Queens passed the ball around well and as McKechnie was upended at the edge of the box, Kyle Doherty played a short free kick to Brennan Dickenson who in turn played it back, only for Paddy O’Neil to save Doherty’s right foot shot.

A short time later, Douglas made a great block at the edge of the six-yard box to deny Pignatiello.

The other chances of the first half both fell to the home side, eight minutes before the break, McIntosh and Doherty set up Craik but he took a touch too many and the ball was cleared for a corner. And three minutes later, Luissint was taken out at the edge of the box but Dickenson this time couldn’t clear the wall with the free kick.

HALF TIME: Queens 1 Dumbarton 0

Eight minutes into the second half the visitors strongly protested for a penalty but referee, Stewart Luke waved away their claims.

And within a minute Queens had made a break, half time substitute MacIntyre charged down the left but as he reached the by-line, he knocked it out for a goal-kick as he tried to cross.

As Queens searched for a second, McIntosh did well as he robbed Michael Miller of the ball, he had Luissint up in support but opted to take it on himself and the chance was gone.

They did double the lead just before the hour mark when Cochrane played in McKechnie, the winger had McIntosh to his left but shot low across the keeper into the bottom corner.

Two minutes later he was unlucky not to grab another when he chased down a long ball before trying to lob O’Neil, agonisingly his effort was just wide of the post.

Into the final quarter of the game, Doherty made space for himself, but his left foot shot was cleared for a corner.

Queens were looking strong, solid, and comfortable and as McIntosh did well in the air, he nodded the ball back into the path of McKechnie, he made his way into the box but choose to make a pass instead of having a shot and the ball was cleared before it reached McIntosh his intended target.

Within minutes, the two were in on goal again, McIntosh shot was blocked by O’Neil but the as he made the save, it fell to McKechnie, who got his shot on target, only for Miller to get back to clear it off the line.

With fifteen minutes remaining, Dickenson moved through the middle, but his effort was turned out for a corner and two minutes later his left foot shot was too high.

In the closing stages, Kennedy made his way to the by-line but again the visitors knocked it clear.

A decent night’s work for Queens as they scored two, kept a clean sheet and picked up three points.
