It was back to league business after the International break and a trip to Cove. With Matty Douglas suspended, Jack Brydon took his place in the centre of defence. In the one other change to the side that had started against Kelty Hearts in the last outing, Harry Cochrane came in for Benji Luissint who dropped to the bench.
As the second quarter of the season got underway, four minutes in Brydon headed away from Fraser Fyvie as the ball was delivered from the left-hand side. Queens instantly made a breakthrough Kieran McKechnie, he was brought down but Lewis ODonnell took up the charge as he collected the loose ball on the wing to deliver first time into the six-yard area. Leighton McIntosh got on the end of it, but his right foot volley was straight at the keeper.
With ten minutes gone Brydons throw in was headed on by Reece Lyon but the home defence ushered the ball into the arms of Balint Demus. A minute later Kai Kennedy played the ball over the top for McKechnie, he held the line to stay onside but the keeper came out his box to head clear.
Queens kept up the pressure and Kennedy played another great ball over the top to McKechnie, his touch was heavy, but he managed to round the keeper before falling in the box.
The home side then enjoyed a spell when Ryan Harrington shot from just inside the box only for Mikey Hewitt to block. Ross Stewart was called into action a short time later as ODonnell gave away a free kick 25-yards out, the ball was played short to the edge of the box and knocked onto Mitch Megginson who turned to hit a left foot shot across goal. It was a decent effort by the striker, but Stewart pushed the ball clear.
Midway through the half, ODonnell played a short corner that eventually came back out to the edge of the box, Lyon stepped up to hit a powerful shot, but the home side got bodies in the way to stop it causing any danger.
Eleven minutes before the break, Cove made the breakthrough, a long ball into the box was headed past Stewart by Fyvie to give them a lead.
As Queens tried to get back level, Kennedy again played the ball into the box, this time McKechnie nodded it on for McIntosh but as he tried to turn it was knocked out for a throw-in.
Kennedy was a ray of light for Queens, and he did well to win the ball before playing it along the 18-yard line, but it was behind McIntosh and too far for McKechnie to get on the end of.
HALF TIME: Cove Rangers 1 Queens 0
Minutes into the second half, ODonnells corner was played into the middle of the box, but the defenders crowded round McIntosh and he couldnt catch sight of goal. McIntosh then needed to be sharper to have a shot after more good play by Kennedy.
It was Queens with most of the possession and as Kennedy whipped the ball in from the right, McIntosh, and Brydon both attacked the ball, but neither could get it on target. As the ball came back out to Cochrane, he hit a right foot shot from 20-yards, but the keeper collected.
Kennedy continued to cause problems and was getting the ball into the box but there was no one in the danger area to cause a threat.
On the hour mark, Fyvie did well to keep control of the ball to beat a couple of defenders. He managed to cut it back from the by-line to Will Gillingham at the near post, but he hit it with power from close range and ended up the wrong side of the upright.
In a bid to get something from the game, Queens brought on Josh Walker for Cochrane and made a change to the formation but it the home side who pushed and Jack Hannah cleared from Megginson before Hewitt hooked clear another attempt.
As the game moved into the final quarter, Brydon found McKechnie centre of goal on the six-yard line, but the ball hit off him rather than him having a proper shot. Kennedy was in good form, and he tested the keeper with a powerful right foot effort from 20-yards. Demus managed to parry the shot away, but Brydon couldnt take advantage of the rebound.
Any hope of taking something from the game ended for Queens eight minutes from time when some scrappy play saw them give the ball away and Megginson had no hesitation in shooting from outside the box to fire the ball past Stewart low into the bottom corner.
The hosts could have added a third in additional time, when Brydon failed to see Megginson coming in as he passed back to Stewart, fortunately the keeper got there first to clear.
