Palmerston was the venue, but it was a break from league one as Queens welcomed St Mirren in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup. Manager, Peter Murphy made one change to the starting line-up with Harry Cochrane dropping down to the bench and Jack Brydon coming into the side.
Three minutes in, Adam Brooks made the inch perfect slide pass for Brennan Dickenson on the right, but his final ball didnt match the pass. Two minutes later Dickenson on the opposite side of the park played the ball down the channel for Oscar MacIntyre to chase, he did well but the defender got on the right side to clear.
It was as strong start from the hosts and Dickenson who looked a real threat raced in but fired the ball over the bar. Saints were forced into an early change as Alex Iacovitti pulled up with what looked like a hamstring injury as he tried to catch Dickenson.
Queens had looked menacing in the opening ten minutes but were dealt a blow when they failed to clear a throw-in and Toyosi Olusanya was unmarked at the back post to force the ball home from two yards out to open the scoring.
The home side had a long throw themselves that Brydon got into the box to Dickenson, but the visitors blocked. And a minute later theyd doubled their lead. As the ball was played into the box by Callum Penman, Olusanya had a free header to beat Ross Stewart to leave Queens two down after twenty minutes.
Brydon was short with a header and as it fell to Mikael Mandron, the big striker tried an acrobatic kick, but Stewart collected.
In the closing stages of the first half, Stewart was called into action to tip a corner over the bar but it was Queens who would have the final chance of the opening forty-five when MacIntyre delivered a great ball in from the wing to Mikey Hewitt inside the six-yard box, his header was on target but Zach Hemming collected.
HALF TIME: Queens 0 St Mirren 2
After a quiet start to the second half, on the hour mark, Mandron held his run to stay onside only for Stewart to come off his line to make the stop.
Midway through the half, Queens started to put the visitors under more pressure and as Kyle Doherty played a short corner to Brooks before getting the ball back, he swung a decent ball into the box to Dickenson, his close-range header was powerful but blocked by Hemming.
It was a good spell for the hosts and as they forced a couple of corners that werent cleared properly Dickenson caught a loose ball on the edge of the box and volleyed it low into the bottom corner.
As Queens pushed looking for a second to give them a chance of extra time, substitute Fraser Bryden was in on the keeper but couldnt make it count and in added on time, were denied what looked a strong claim for a penalty when Brooks went down in the box as he was caught on the face by Alex Gogic. It wasnt given and as Doherty missed a connection with the ball to get it back in, St Mirren hit on the counterattack and Caolan Boyd-Munce fired the ball past Stewart to secure the victory with the last kick of the game.
