Match Preview v Hearts (Away)

This weekend we travel to Edinburgh to take on table toppers Heart of Midlothian. After last Friday’s disappointing defeat to Inverness at Palmerston, we will be looking to bounce back against the Jambos, just a week before they take on Celtic in the Scottish Cup Final.

It’ll be a return ‘home’ for Queens boss, Allan Johnston who began his playing career at Tynecastle, whilst Hearts manager Robbie Neilson enjoyed a successful loan spell at Palmerston in the early 2000s. The hosts have a side littered with international experience with the likes of Liam Boyce, Steven Naismith, Craig Gordon and Christoph Berra all on the books at Gorgie, along with Ross Stewart, who was on loan at Queens last season. Stewart is expected to be amongst the subs for the home side, deputising for Gordon.

Despite winning a pre-season friendly against tomorrow’s opponents in 2018, the last time Queens defeated the Jam Tarts in competitive action was in 1963 in a 1-0 victory at Tynecastle in the old Division 1.

Hearts’ top scorer this season is left-back Stephen Kingsley with three goals (joint with Stephen Dobbie), while Olly Lee tops the assists table with the same number. The hosts have bagged 15 goals in just five home games this season, winning all five of them, including a 6-2 opening day demolition of Dundee. Queens, meanwhile, have picked up a win and two draws in five away games this season so far, scoring nine times, albeit conceding the same amount.

As he prepares the side for a return to his former club, Manager Allan Johnston said “After the disappointment of last week, it’s all about how we respond. It was frustrating against Inverness as we thought we had turned a corner. But we started too slow and gave them the confidence. We had our own chances but we’ve got to take them when they come along and make the keeper work more or you’ll get punished like we did.

This week we head to the favourites for the title and people will write us off so we need to work hard. We know we’re going to have to defend well but with the quality players we’ve got we hope to get the goals we need.

We would prefer to have the fans there as it’s always a fantastic atmosphere at Tynecastle but you want to play the best teams and test yourself against the best players and that’s what we’re facing this weekend”.
