Match Preview v Raith Rovers (Home)

We have our third home game in a row tomorrow evening as Raith Rovers visit Palmerston for our rearranged Championship match.

The Kirkcaldy side were comfortable winners on their last visit to Dumfries as goals from Ross Mathews, Manny Duku (2), Dylan Tait and Brad Spencer were too much for a Stephen Dobbie penalty and an Ayo Obileye header and Rovers won 5-2.

However, it was a different story when the sides met in Fife on the 29th December. Following an injury to Jack Leighfield in the warm-up, 16-year-old Charlie Cowie was in goal for us that night and kept a clean-sheet and a first-half Connor Shields strike was added to by a late Tommy Goss goal to seal the deal for Queens.

It marked the start of an amazing run for the us that has seen us rise from bottom of the table to promotion play-off contenders. Rovers currently lie second in the table and will look to strengthen their position in the top four with victory at Palmerston.

John McGlynn has overseen a remarkable season in Kirkcaldy. His squad contains a healthy blend of youthfulness and experience, with ex-Doonhamer Jamie MacDonald in the sticks for Rovers. MacDonald wrote himself into the Queens history books in 2008 after helping the team to the Scottish Cup Final against Rangers.

A myriad of new signings in January from McGlynn means that Rovers always have a reasonably strong squad and will be at near full strength for their trip to Dumfries on Tuesday. Lewis Vaughan has been back in the team in recent weeks after recovering from a long-term injury.

For Queens it’s likely to be the same squad. Dan Pybus and Joe McKee have returned to full fitness and are back in the mix along with Isaiah Jones who started against Inverness at the weekend after recovering from a hamstring injury.

Ahead of the game tomorrow, boss Allan Johnston said “Our match against Inverness was a good game with both sides going all out for the win. There wasn’t much between the two teams but we broke the deadlock with a great goal from Aidan Fitzpatrick. Inverness scored shortly after we scored which is always frustrating but in the main, I thought we defended well against one of the form teams in our league.

The boys have been excellent and we will need the same level of quality in the remaining games to keep the pressure on the teams above us. We have real quality going forward and always look a threat so if we can defend well as a team, we can win any game.

Next, we face a Raith side who have also had a good season. We have watched them a lot recently and if you let them play, they are a good side. We will have to play at our best to get a result and continue our push to get into top four”.
