Match Preview v Airdrie (H)

Tomorrow we round off our Premier Sports cup Group F matches with the visit of Airdrie.

In recent seasons we have met in cup competition and both have resulted in victories for us. In 2016 in the league cup, a Derek Lyle first half double was enough to earn us a 2 – 0 win while the following season we were 4 – 0 winners in the Irn Bru cup. Derek Lyle was again on target along with Jason Kerr, Darren Brownlie and Shaun Rooney.

This time around the visitors are sitting in a good position and have a chance to qualify for the knockout stages after Rhys McCabe scored in their 2 -0 win over Motherwell at the Penny Cars Stadium in midweek. The result leaves them second in the group on six points, one behind leaders Queens Park who have already completed their fixtures. A win for the Diamonds would see them top the section and progress into the knockout stages of the tournament.

The midfielder is one of several players within their squad who have previously played for Queens. Callum Fordyce, Adam Frizzell and Salim Kouider-Aissa are also on their books.

Looking ahead to the match, Queens Manager Allan Johnston said “Overall I have been fairly satisfied with the league cup campaign. We have had three good performances so far and it has given the players a chance to build up their game time”.

“We are still pulling together our squad and are still a few bodies light so its been a good opportunity for the squad who are already in place to get to know each other. It’s given them a chance to play together and to build confidence”

“Airdrie will be full of confidence after their win in midweek, but we want to end our games on a high ahead of next week’s opening game in the Championship”.
