Match Preview v Morton (away) 2nd Feb 22

Our cinch Championship campaign continues tomorrow with a re-arranged game away at Morton. The match was originally scheduled for Boxing Day but was postponed due to a Covid outbreak within the squad.

This our second visit to Cappielow will be our fourth game against the Greenock side this season. Our last trip came early in the season when we claimed the three points with a 3 – 2 victory in August. Ruben Soares Junior scored what proved to be the winner that day.

Our other league game at Palmerston in October ended goal-less but we were 2 – 1 winners when they returned to Dumfries at the start of December for our SPFL Trust Trophy quarter final tie. Max Johnston gave us the lead with a first half opener, but that was cancelled out by Alan Lithgow with four minutes to go, only for Ruari Paton to score two minutes later to see us through to the last four.

Since then, Morton have appointed Dougie Imrie as manager, and they’ve picked up in form and currently sit 5 points better off than us with 24 points from 23 games.

Ahead of the game our Manager, Allan Johnston said “It was disappointing our game at Partick Thistle was called off last weekend because we had a good performance away at Raith in midweek and we wanted to continue the momentum. But there is nothing much we could do about it, the heavy rain in Glasgow meant the pitch was waterlogged and that is out of our hands.

Games are getting less, and we need to put a run of results together to get ourselves away from the wrong end of the table. This game isn’t going to decide if we get out of the relegation zone or whether we get relegated, it’s another chance to get three points. There is, however, extra significance because it’s a team round about us.

Morton are on a good run of form and have picked up under the new manager, but we will focus on ourselves. Cappielow is always a tough place to go but hopefully the fans will get behind the team as it’s a massive period coming up for the club and we all need to be pulling in the same direction”.
