The youth sides continued their season with games against Montrose.
Under 16’s coach Ross Newlands provided a report from their match. “Despite the early start and travel, the young side began the match well creating a couple of early opportunities. However, it was the home side who went in front, when a defensive mix up allowed them to slid the ball into the net. However, it didn’t deter the boys and they hit back with two set-piece goals to lead at the break. Firstly, Lewis White prodded home from inside the six-yard box following a looping header with Ignis Banys heading home to give Queens the lead.
The boys knew Montrose would come back at them in the second half, but a goal within 14 seconds of the restart increased the advantage. From kick off, they made three passes before Frankie Hodgson cut back for Ben Morton to finish into the far corner of the goal. They added a fourth when Ross Clacherty played a brilliant pass up the line to Dylan Craig who crossed for William Salfenmoser to finish at the near post. The home side came back into the game and the boys had to remain disciplined, but the pressure eventually paid off, cutting the deficit to two goals. But in the final minutes, a through ball from White was superbly finished by Salfenmoser who lobbed the onrushing goalie. Montrose went on to score a late consolation to round off an eight-goal thriller.
Overall, it was a pleasing performance from the young team against a good Montrose team.”
The Under 16s are back in action against Montrose this weekend when they host them in a rearranged CAS Cup Group Stage match.
The 16s would also like to extend a massive thank you to the Co-op in Wigtown who kindly donated £250 to the squad. The contribution will help fund resources for the team moving forward. We are thankful that they considered us as part of their contribution projects.
Meanwhile, the Under 18s also travelled to Montrose. They made the trip with a depleted squad due to injuries and loans. Coach Neil Sturrock said “Both teams started bright with good passages of play and Queens took the lead midway through the first half when Caiden Baty finished off a good move down the right. Montrose, having missed a few early chances, started to come into the game and equalized ten minutes before the break. Changes were required after the interval due to injury and the home side controlled the second half coming away 5-1 winners”.
Thanks to Montrose for their hospitality and we look forward to playing them twice more this season.
